Quote: Roy Batty’s monologue “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.”
We decided to construct our collage around the quote within the film said by Roy just before his death. When Roy said “All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain. Time to die.”, I began to think about the two sides within Blade Runner’s world and how the construct of time remains an ever-present theme throughout the depiction of both Deckard and the Replicants.
For these reasons, I found that the use of an umbrella could act as a metaphor for the want or need for more time by humanity and the rain washing everything away as reality.
On the top of the umbrella, I placed images around the perimeter displaying a futuristic society and different aspects of advancing technology that could potentially have certain risks or dangers. I also included images displaying dystopian societies to further showcase how the presentation of replicants within Blade Runner presented the possible downfalls of mankind through artificial intelligence.
On the inside of the umbrella, I decided to hang raindrops or tears from string along with images of nature and creatures within our world that go through their lifecycle and eventually cease to exist. Through this array of images, I wanted to display the fragility of life and its temporary qualities. On one specific raindrop, I displayed a dying and a blooming rose. This was to show the fleeting moments of nature and how its beauty can only be defined within a portion of its life.
In addition to the collection of these images, I ensured I included a dove within the bottom portion of the umbrella and an owl on the top of the umbrella. This was to represent the depictions within the film used when the replicant owl was seen in the creator’s home and the dove was released by Roy at the film’s conclusion.
I believe overall the message behind our collage was the beauty of life’s fleeting moments and the risk AI and technology have to their presence within our world.
